Psoriasis

Common Factors

The exact causes of psoriasis are not fully understood, but it is believed to be a multifactorial condition influenced by a combination of genetic, immune system, and environmental factors. Here are some of the commonly recognized factors that contribute to the development of psoriasis:

  1. Genetic predisposition: Psoriasis tends to run in families, indicating a genetic component. Certain genes, particularly those involved in the immune system and skin cell growth, may increase the risk of developing psoriasis.
  2. Immune system dysfunction: Psoriasis is considered an autoimmune disorder, where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells. T cells, a type of white blood cell, are believed to play a key role in triggering inflammation and the accelerated production of skin cells.
  3. Triggering factors: Various triggers can activate or exacerbate psoriasis symptoms in susceptible individuals. Common triggers include stress, infections (such as strep throat or skin infections), injury to the skin (including cuts, scrapes, or sunburn), certain medications (such as beta-blockers, lithium, or antimalarial drugs), and hormonal changes.
  4. Environmental factors: Environmental factors, such as cold and dry weather conditions, can worsen psoriasis symptoms. Additionally, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and obesity have been associated with an increased risk of developing psoriasis or worsening existing symptoms.
  5. Psychological factors: Emotional stress, anxiety, and depression have been found to be associated with psoriasis. While stress does not cause psoriasis directly, it can trigger or exacerbate flare-ups in individuals who are already predisposed to the condition.
  6. Lifestyle factors: Unhealthy lifestyle habits, including a poor diet, lack of exercise, and inadequate sleep, may contribute to the development or worsening of psoriasis symptoms.

The Fumigation and Washing Therapy

The fumigation and washing therapy, also known as "Xun Xi" in Chinese medicine, is an important external treatment method guided by the basic principles of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves using a decoction of Chinese herbs, which is prepared by boiling the herbs, to steam, wash, and soak the affected area while it is still hot.

During the fumigation process, the affected area is exposed to the herbal steam, allowing the medicinal properties of the herbs to penetrate the skin and exert therapeutic effects. This method is often used for treating skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis, as well as joint and muscle problems, and perianal diseases .

The washing technique involves applying the herbal decoction directly to the affected area, either by pouring or spraying, to cleanse the skin and enhance the absorption of the herbal ingredients. This can help relieve inflammation, alleviate itching, and promote healing.

In some cases, the affected area may be immersed in a warm herbal decoction for a certain period, known as soaking therapy. This allows the herbal properties to penetrate deeper into the skin and achieve a more thorough therapeutic effect.

Herbal Topical Ointments For Psoriasis

Herbal formulations are made into topical ointments that can be directly applied to the affected area. These ointments usually contain herbs that clear heat, detoxify, promote blood circulation, and resolve stasis. They help reduce inflammation, inhibit abnormal cell growth, and promote skin healing.
