Insomnia

Common Reasons

 

Insomnia, or difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, can have various causes. Here are some common reasons for insomnia:

  1. Stress and anxiety: Stressful life events, work pressures, or personal worries can contribute to insomnia. Racing thoughts, excessive worry, and an overactive mind can make it difficult to relax and fall asleep.
  2. Mental health disorders: Conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and chronic stress can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to insomnia.
  3. Poor sleep habits: Irregular sleep schedule, excessive daytime napping, consuming stimulating substances close to bedtime (such as caffeine or nicotine), and engaging in stimulating activities (like using electronic devices) before bed can disrupt sleep and contribute to insomnia.
  4. Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions can cause insomnia or make it more challenging to sleep, including chronic pain, asthma, allergies, gastrointestinal problems, neurological disorders, and hormonal imbalances (such as thyroid disorders).
  5. Medications: Some medications, including certain antidepressants, stimulants, and medications for high blood pressure, can interfere with sleep and contribute to insomnia.
  6. Lifestyle factors: Poor sleep hygiene, such as an uncomfortable sleep environment, excessive noise, bright lights, or irregular exercise patterns, can disrupt sleep and contribute to insomnia. 
  7. Environmental factors: Environmental factors, such as excessive heat or cold, uncomfortable bedding, or disruptions in the sleep environment (like noise or light pollution), can make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep.
  8. Age-related changes: Insomnia becomes more common as people age. Older adults may experience changes in sleep patterns, increased medical conditions, or medication use that can contribute to insomnia.
  9. Hormonal changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or menopause, can disrupt sleep patterns and contribute to insomnia.

TCM View


 

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), insomnia is seen as a disturbance in the balance of Yin and Yang energies within the body. It is often attributed to underlying imbalances or disharmonies in specific organs and meridians. TCM takes a holistic approach to insomnia treatment by addressing the root causes and restoring balance to the body. Here are some common patterns and treatments for insomnia in TCM:

  1. Heart and Liver imbalance: Insomnia related to this pattern is often characterized by difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, vivid dreaming, and irritability. TCM treatment focuses on calming the mind, nourishing the Heart, and regulating Liver Qi. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and lifestyle adjustments may be recommended.
  2. Spleen and Stomach deficiency: This pattern is associated with poor sleep quality, feeling unrested upon waking, and a tendency to overthink or worry. TCM treatment aims to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach, harmonize the digestive system, and nourish the Blood and Qi. Dietary changes, herbal remedies, and stress-reducing techniques may be used. 
  3. Kidney Yin or Yang deficiency: Insomnia due to Kidney Yin deficiency is characterized by difficulty falling asleep, waking up easily, and feeling restless or hot at night. Kidney Yang deficiency insomnia presents as feeling cold, having frequent urination, and experiencing lower back weakness. TCM treatment focuses on nourishing Kidney Yin or Yang, tonifying the Kidneys, and balancing Yin and Yang energies. Herbal remedies, acupuncture, and lifestyle modifications may be recommended.
  4. Phlegm and Qi stagnation: Insomnia related to this pattern is associated with a heavy feeling in the head, chest congestion, difficulty breathing, and racing thoughts. TCM treatment aims to resolve Qi stagnation, clear Phlegm, and promote smooth flow of Qi and Blood. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary changes may be utilized.
  5. External factors: TCM also considers external factors that can disrupt sleep, such as exposure to excessive cold, heat, or dampness. Adjusting the sleep environment and lifestyle habits in accordance with TCM principles may be recommended.

How does acupuncture work for insomnia

 Acupuncture  is commonly used to treat insomnia. While the exact mechanisms of how acupuncture works for insomnia are not fully understood, there are several theories and potential ways in which acupuncture may help:

  1. Regulation of neurotransmitters: Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, which are involved in regulating sleep-wake cycles and mood. This may help to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality.
  2. Modulation of the autonomic nervous system: Acupuncture has been shown to influence the autonomic nervous system, which controls various bodily functions, including sleep. It can help balance the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branches of the nervous system, promoting a state of relaxation and calmness conducive to sleep.
  3. Regulation of hormonal levels: Acupuncture may help regulate the levels of hormones involved in sleep and stress, such as cortisol and melatonin. By influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, acupuncture may help restore normal hormonal balance, improving sleep patterns.
  4. Reduction of pain and discomfort: Insomnia can be exacerbated by pain, discomfort, or underlying health conditions. Acupuncture is known for its analgesic (pain-relieving) effects and can help alleviate physical discomfort, thereby facilitating better sleep.
  5. Promotion of overall well-being: Acupuncture is a holistic therapy that aims to restore balance and harmony in the body. By addressing the underlying imbalances and disharmonies in the body's energy flow (Qi), acupuncture treatments can enhance overall well-being, reduce stress, and improve sleep. 

The needles are typically left in place for a designated period, which can range from a few minutes to 30 minutes or more. Sometimes we may also incorporate other techniques such as moxibustion (heat therapy) or electrical stimulation to enhance the effects of the treatment.
