General information

There are various types of back pain, and they can be classified based on different factors such as the underlying cause, location of pain, and duration. Here are some common types of back pain:

  1. Non-Specific Mechanical Back Pain: This is the most common type of back pain and typically arises from muscle strains, ligament sprains, or mechanical issues in the spine. It is often characterized by localized pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion.
  2. Herniated Disc: Also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, this condition occurs when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc protrudes through the outer layer, causing pressure on surrounding nerves. It can result in sharp or radiating pain, numbness, and tingling.
  3. Sciatica: Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back down the back of each leg. It is often caused by compression or irritation of the nerve, and it can cause sharp, shooting pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks, leg, or foot.
  4. Spondylosis: Spondylosis is a degenerative condition that involves wear and tear of the spinal discs and joints. It can lead to chronic back pain, stiffness, and loss of flexibility.
  5. Spondylolisthesis: This condition occurs when one vertebra slips forward over the one below it. It can cause lower back pain, muscle tightness, and nerve compression symptoms.
  6. Spinal Stenosis: Spinal stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spinal canal, resulting in pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. It commonly leads to pain, numbness, and weakness in the back and legs, which may worsen with walking or prolonged standing.
  7. Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis can affect the joints in the spine and cause chronic pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Although back pain is often seen as a result of imbalances or blockages in the body's Qi (energy) and Blood circulation, as trained as orthopedist in the university,  I treat back pain more related with anatomical perspective 。

Stiff neck and shoulder pain

Self-care measures can help alleviate symptoms and promote relief from stiff neck and shoulder pain. Here are some self-care tips that you can try:

  1. Rest and Avoid Straining: Take a break from activities that may exacerbate the pain and allow your neck and shoulder muscles to rest and recover.
  2. Gentle Stretching and Range of Motion Exercises: Perform gentle neck and shoulder stretches to improve flexibility and relieve tension. Move your neck in different directions, such as side-to-side, up-and-down, and rotation. Additionally, perform shoulder rolls and gentle shoulder stretches to loosen up the muscles.
  3. Posture Correction: Pay attention to your posture, especially when sitting for extended periods. Sit up straight, align your spine, and avoid slouching. Use proper ergonomics while working at a desk or using electronic devices to minimize strain on your neck and shoulders.
  4. Ergonomic Adjustments: Ensure that your workspace is set up ergonomically, with a supportive chair, proper desk height, and adequate computer monitor positioning. This helps maintain good posture and reduces strain on the neck and shoulders.
  5. Stress Reduction: Stress can contribute to muscle tension and exacerbate neck and shoulder pain. Engage in relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga, to reduce overall stress levels and promote muscle relaxation.
  6. Improve Sleep Position: Use a supportive pillow and ensure that your sleeping position maintains proper alignment of the neck and spine. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, as it can strain the neck.
