General information

There are over 100 different types of arthritis. The most common types include:

  1. Osteoarthritis (OA): This is the most prevalent form of arthritis and occurs due to wear and tear on the joints over time. It typically affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hips, and spine.
  2. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): RA is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, causing chronic inflammation. It commonly affects the hands, wrists, and feet.
  3. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA): PsA is a type of arthritis that develops in some individuals with psoriasis, a chronic skin condition. It can cause joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, often affecting the fingers and toes.
  4. Gout: Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis characterized by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. It often affects the big toe but can also involve other joints.
  5. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS): AS primarily affects the spine, causing inflammation and stiffness in the vertebrae. It can also affect other joints, such as the hips and shoulders.
  6. Juvenile arthritis: This term encompasses various types of arthritis that occur in children and teenagers. It includes juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), which is the most common form.
  7. Reactive arthritis: Reactive arthritis is typically triggered by an infection in another part of the body, such as the urinary tract or gastrointestinal tract. It commonly affects the joints, eyes, and genital tract.

These are just a few examples, and there are numerous other types of arthritis, each with its unique characteristics and underlying causes.

TCM view

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), arthritis is generally classified as "Bi Syndrome." Bi Syndrome is characterized by pain, stiffness, and limitation of movement in the joints and muscles. TCM views arthritis as a manifestation of an imbalance or blockage of Qi (energy) and Blood circulation in the meridians and collaterals.

According to TCM theory, there are different patterns or types of Bi Syndrome that can manifest in arthritis. Some common patterns include:

  1. Wind-Cold-Damp Bi: This pattern is associated with joint pain that worsens in cold and damp weather. It is often characterized by stiffness, heaviness, and aching in the affected joints.
  2. Wind-Heat Bi: This pattern is associated with joint pain that is aggravated by heat and inflammation. It may manifest as redness, swelling, and warmth in the affected joints.
  3. Damp-Heat Bi: This pattern is characterized by joint pain that is worsened by damp and humid conditions. It may present with swelling, redness, and a sensation of heaviness or dampness in the joints.
  4. Blood Stasis Bi: This pattern is associated with chronic and stubborn joint pain. It is often accompanied by a fixed or stabbing pain sensation and may involve joint deformities.

The treatment principles in TCM for arthritis aim to invigorate Qi and Blood circulation, dispel pathogenic factors, and restore the balance of Yin and Yang in the body t to promote circulation,   reduce inflammation,  relive pain,   and improve joint mobility  The specific treatment approaches may include: Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine,    Tui Na Massage , Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations .
